Indian paramilitary soldiers stand infront of closed shops during a strike in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir, 27 October 2011. A day-long strike to protest the arrival of Indian troops in Kashmir in 1947 shut most of the shops and businesses in the revolt-hit region's main city. Indian troops landed in Kashmir on October 27, 1947, after the Himalayan region's Hindu ruler-Maharaja Hari Singh sought help from India to fend off an invasion by Pakistan-backed tribesmen. The Maharaja initially held out for independence of Kashmir, when Britain withdrew from the Indian subcontinent in August 1947. After Indian troops landed in Kashmir and restored peace, the then prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru said he would agree to United Nations resolutions calling for a plebiscite on the status of the region.
